About the Ensemble
The Columbia Handbell Ensemble was born one sunny summer day in 1989, when Deb Carr, Tom Brintnall and Ed Rollins sat around a local restaurant wondering what an auditioned bell group, not associated with a church, might look like. The possibilities seemed pretty exciting. Out of that discussion, CHE was born. The three drew straws to see who would ring and who would direct. Deb drew the directing straw and Ed and Tom started a long tenure as bass bell ringers.
Through the years, the ensemble has garnered national recognition as the featured choir for Area 1, Area 8 (three times), the National Festival Conference (twice), and the National Seminar (twice) of the Handbell Musicians of America. In addition to its national recognition, the CHE has collaborated with numerous organizations and music groups in our own community.
As the Columbia Handbell Ensemble heads into its fourth decade, it continues to promote musical excellence through handbells.
